Schumi on tsunami, retirement and 2005...
From crash.net:
Quote:
"The new car, the 2005 car, is going to arrive by the end of February and as we are not going to use that for the start of the season, we are going to have an interim solution and every update will always be available for the interim solutions car, which is last year's car which we have changed to the new regulations," he explained.
This 'intermediate' car will make its debut test in Italy next week or the week after.

"There is no time frame for me," he replied. "There is obviously not the intention to make long term contracts because you have to take in my age, from year to year, and I will obviously think what is going to be my future at the appropriate time. That's obviously the question it leads to. But the contract runs out at the end of 2006 so for me there is enough time to then talk about it at the right moment. But I see no end at the moment, no. Sorry!"

Many observers feel that when Schumacher decides to retire it will be an immediate thing - so I'm not surprised he hasn't ever put a date on his future.

He will announce his retirement on Damon Hill's 46th birthday.

I would agree with that, I think MS will wake up one day and simply not want to race anymore - only he will know when that days comes, or what factor will decide it.

Yes, it will be his discussion. Any indications that we may think we see are at the moment wild guesses (like mine above!).

I also agree that Michael will retire on-the-spot. His motivation level is so high, he will accept noting less than the optimum. The moment he finds himself distracted/disinterested, he will hang it up.

I agree with that, but I don't think it will be mid-season. I think it may be a decision he arrives at when he wakes up the morning after the final race of the season. Possibly in 2024...

How is it possible that MS can still be so driven (motivated) after all these years??? Why doesn't he try another discipline like Sportscars, WRC or maybe even Champ Car!?

He is so motivated by F1. He loves the cars, he wants to drive the fastest cars. He loves his team. I'm sure he would do well and have fun, but F1 is what he wants to do and I see no reason why he should change.

I've never understood why he's so reluctant to try other disciplines as well as continue with F1. Why not try new things, it would be fun for him and if anything I think it would mean that he becomes less bored with the monotony of doing only one thing? Recall Ferrari has said that they don't want him to test constantly because it would bore him into retirement.
I recall watching an interview with him on CBS' "60 Minuites" news magazine program. He was asked why after he's accomplished so much he wouldn't try to do the Indy 500. He said that it would be a step down for him. I was quiet surprised when he did the race of champions this year. With limited exposure, even the best don't always win. In reality doing DTM or WRC, etc. would likely provide him with a more difficult challange than F1 does.

Like ROC, karting, trying Solberg's Suburu, trying the Mazza sportscar.
He also likes to test the Ferrari.
However I think the main reason is that he spends so much time doing F1 (which is why he is so good too and because he enjoys it) that the free time he has is at a premium. He choses to spend the free time with his family rather than 'waste' it trying new things. They'll be plenty of time for that later...
