Scatley Archive accident images
I was just looking through the Fred Scatley Archive posted on 10-10ths and was entranced by some of the pictures. Its such a pity there isn't more around documenting epic events of the 1960s and 1970s such as the F5000 championship and BTCC rounds. The Lotus Cortina at Thruxton's awesome. Still I guess it was in an era before the mass proliferation of media we have today.

One thing that did shock me were the mini pictures and the Jock Russell accident. Does anyone know anymore about these ? They all appear to be extremely serious and I would be surprised if fatalities hadn't occurred there. I would love to hear any information... my fingers are crossed that everyone in them was OK.

Just our of interest, have a look at this, it even shows you that the Mini driver walked away.

Peter,

I saw that too, but assumed that he was from another car that had stopped to help. There's not a scratch on him and that mini and the other one being towed appear unsurvivable. Back then, when accidents were really bad [and they were often], other drivers had a habit of pulling up to help marshalls etc... Fatalities were a regular occurance even at club events. Safety is so good today we're anaesthesized from it to a certain extent. Thankfully I've only ever experienced one fatality at a track... in 1992 when Marcel Albers succumbed at Thruxton. It was one too many though.

Ted Walker should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Jock Russell did in fact survive the accident and the ex Clark Lotus 43 did also As for Freds archive,it is alive and well and living in Gloucestershire along with 5 Million plus other images.

That's good news Ted.

By the way, do you know much about Fred's archive ? Are they all motorsport images ? How many of them are there and do you know who's currently looking after it ?
