Lola T240

Seeing the ad for a rather nicely restored T240-HU10 reminded me that we haven't so far touched on any of these quickly forgotten Lolas.

My records have the following:

HU1. Works F2 development car for Gardner and Marko
HU2: Probably Hayes for Mike Hiss
HU3: Probably Skip Walther
HU4: Syd Demovsky, retained 1972
HU5: Probably Rocky Moran
HU6: Probably Chuck and Jim Sarich
HU7: Probably Chuck and Jim Sarich
HU8: Unknown 1971, 1972 Wannemacher. 1973 Ed Kasprowicz
HU9: Don't know
HU10: Don't know, but the resoration is good!
HU11: Don't know
HU12: Quin Calhoun. 1973 Carmon Solomone, retained 1974
HU14: Don't know
HU15: Late season Hayes car for Hiss and Moran. 1973 to Ted Titmus, see ad on www.racecars.com
T242: HU16 [1972] Don't know
HU17 Don't know - only two T242s built.

Any advance on this?

Chris

jamesl has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
There are two running in historic F2, Bob Juggins' car and Tim Barrington's. Not sure of the chassis numbers but both are absolutly immaculate.(and very quick)

Have you got hold of Lola's records for the T240 or do they just say 'Haas' everywhere?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wasn't T242 the original designation of the T240 based F5000 car that became known as T300? So was there a "real" T242 for F2, Atlantic or whatever?

I think that they were all, bar HU1, built as FBs
There were only two official 242s, both ended up in the US. I don't think Gardner's experimental 242/300 was part of the build series

I owned HU-17 T-242 for a while in the 80's. Bought it from someone in Kentucky, US. Never got around to restoring it and sold it less motor to someone in North Carolina who wanted the suspension and bits for an autocross car. Did not keep track of him. Sale would have taken place around 1988. I can confirm it was built as a atlantic, not a F5000.

T242 HU17 for sale Autoweek 11 Jan 82 p. 32 Vegantune t/c 614 864-5800; 614 876 1902 chassis number given, seller is Tom Young. I wonder if this is a relative of Bob Young, the Colorado banker who ran a T242 in 74/5 before buying a T360. Is 614 Denver or Boulder district code?
I think Bob Young is still racing in SCCA or historics.
Charles, I'm hoping you've run across him.

614 864-5800 is Reynoldsburg, OH and 614 876 1902 is Hilliard, OH. They are both suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. A long way from Colorado.

But not that far from Kentucky which makes sense.

The only pre 82 T240/242 I've got in Ohio is that of Robert Jones [Tipp City OH] in 1975/76, which was, I think, a T240

Allen's post brings back memories. Tom Young and I met half way between his place and mine in Memphis. I believe it was Bowling Green, Kentucky near the Corvette factory. I worked on the tub and suspension for a while then got involved in S2000 and atlantics and sold the beastie. I got it as a roller and sold it the same way. It resided at Essex Racing in Atlanta for about a year as I was going to have Michael Gue restore it. That never happened and I collected it. I can not remember where it went unfortunately. I remember the gent wanted to use the gearbox and suspension for an autocross car. I hope he changed his mind and kept it original.

Chris,

Color was a garish red with gold pin stripes. I believe the gelcoat was crimson. I will look for any pictures I might have when I get home.

'Garish red' probably rules it out from being another of my unknown T240/2s then. I've got a picture of a start at Nelson Ledges in May 1980 and can identify all the Atlantics except two at the back - a white T360 and a white T240.
The gelcoat on the build list says 17 was 'orange', so crimson is probably right. I wonder, given the original color, if this was not the Marathon Oil car for Jim Harrell in 1972, replacing his T240

Looking for history on my Lola T-240

I have a ?1972? Lola Formula B/Atlantic car, with a Hart twin-cam engine. I also have a spare chassis. Neither have a chassis plate/number. I have had these for over 20 years. The complete car was obtained from a Tom Fennel, of Northern Illinois. I am looking for the car's history, the chassis designation etc. and would welcome any assistance. Perhaps this would assist you to fill in some of the blank spots in your history of the T-240 series. I have photos of the car, at speed and at rest.
Thanks much.
Ken.

Ken

Welcome to the forum. I have to say that our histories of Lola T240s and T242s have a great many blank spots.
Given that neither car has a chassis plate we have to fall back on other forms of identification.
First question: Is the spare chassis part of another, separate car, or do you think it was the original chassis from the car, subsequently replaced by a newer one?
Second question: Do you have the original bodywork from when you bought the cars? If so, what is the original gelcoat colour and what the succession of paint coats over it?
Third question: Are there any scrutineer's labels or similar things attached to either tub or body?
I guess, being Northern Illinois in origin, that the car/s was raced in CenDiv SCCA during the seventies and early eighties. Is there an SCCA code stamped anywhere on the roll hoops? Should be two digit number then a separate two or three digit code.

If you have pics please can you email me on chris[at]oldracingcars[dot]com with scans. I have a number of pictures of Cen Div SCCA T240s, and yours may be a match!

Good to hear from you
Chris

Lola T-240

Spare chassis does not have a chassis plate or decals. Two spare rollbars do not have any i.d. One of these rollbars has been damaged; bashed inward on driver's right, lower down near where it attaches to a tub. Spare chassis has no damage . Complete car has no i.d. on rollbar. Spare main body section = dark green/black underside. Has a recess behind driver's neck with a blue/silver label, reads: Specialized Mouldings Ltd, Huntindon England. Complete car main body section = white/red, white underside sprayed; has black/dark areas. Has the same recess, label painted over, can make out England. Engine cover = white/red, black underside. Nosecone = white/red, adj. canards, raw under underside. Wings = 1 spare all fibreglas 2 post light blue. 1 spare aluminum single post large sideplates. 1 on car aluminum with 2 chrome rear gussets going into 2 front gussets. Spare fuel bladder = MARSTON Wolverhampton England Mfg Apr 71. Contractors Part No D240/12004RH, Serial No JM______, Material FIA FT3, Inspection Stamp _JM___. Will send photos on next missive. My associate on the Lola was Walt. He has a Rondel. If you look under Motul m1, he sent a posting to you, which appears to have no response. I hope all of this helps and leads us to more info. Thanks much. Ken.

Should be a stamping on the gearbox, assuming it's got its original FT200 on it
Do any of the following appear
FT200-612
627
629
636
474
475

Regarding the spare bodywork in green. There was a green T240 raced in SCCA in the Detroit area in 1976, which might be right, given your location.

Also, are there any number stampings on the Hart t/c?

I did send a message to your friend Walt, but if he replied it might have got filtered out by my works spam filter. Would like to talk to him about Rondels as have made significant progress since then

I have the center/cockpit and engine cover fiber glass body work pieces from the hu-1 car if anyone is interested in buying them..both in excellant condition. One of the later owners..Ralph Denny verified this to my satifaction. Plus I know the car a bit and did a little work on it. The nose piece went with the sale of my T-300 to Michael Shank. I also can fill in anyone with what happened to the car if interested.
