I think those numbers are pretty respectable, especially for cable. The big mistake was not doing everything possible to get that race on ABC. It's a no-brainer, if you tuned into the Indy 500 there, you expect to see the next race there as well, and many new/old or casual fans wouldn't know to look for the race on ESPN.
There are probably a good number of new fans now, but I think the bump was probably due more to older IndyCar fans seeing the Indy 500 for the first time in years, mainly because of Danica, and it was rousing enough to get them excited and nostalgic about the good old days of the Andretti's and Unser's, Johncock, Rutherford, Ongais, Carter, Mears, Sullivan and Foyt, and so many others, that they may be hooked again to this style of racing...
