BAR to do speed run on the Bonneville Salt Flats?

I found it on another formula one forum, so it may not be exactly true but it would be interesting if it was infact true. Aybody here know anything about this?

Quote:
At the end of this F1 season, BAR Honda will head to the Bonneville Salt Flats to see actually how fast thier car can go at top speed.

They predict around 250, 260 mph.

They will attach a "dragster stlye" parachute to the back of the car.

They also might choose A.Davidson to do the honour's.

I hope they show it on SPEED CHANNEL, that would be fun to watch.

Well I'm sure with the appropriate gearing an F1 car could achieve that relatively easily.

A waste of effort, then, given that tobacco ads are to be completely banned at the end of this month.

Should be an interesting exercise if they go through with it, though.

Jeremy - just a thought - what else would you expect they'll do with their money? Give it to Battersea Dogs Home? Fund the Cancer Unit at a reputable London hospital? The whole of F1 is a waste of money if you think this PR stunt would be.

Well there is all this talk about saving money, how out of control spending has become in F1.. So with that in mind the cost of running this so called *test* is a pure waste of it don't you think Logrence? Now if BAR have extra funds just burning a hole in their pockets then I like your idea a lot, Battersea Dogs Home would be a good place to start.

its not really testing is it ?
i mean testing the top speed of an f1 car ???
they never reach it at the circuits we visit so its not really for testings
its obvious its for P/R rather than tests

I think the whole of F1 is a waste of money when people are out there starving, but I'm still going to enjoy it...

Perhaps they should stop all publicity events such as Goodwood as well? Amd they don't need those big shiney trucks with adverts on... wouldn't it be cheaper to get a couple of curtainsiders to rumble round in?

Think you're missing the point about the money thing - it is important that costs to compete are cut back to allow smaller teams to compete but it makes not a jot of difference to the sport how much the teams spend publicising and promoting themselves - in fact the more they spend the better for the sport.

Kirk has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Surely Ant can refuse to do it. It sounds like a stupid idea to me.

No they should not. Goodwood makes it possible for the fans to get a lot closer to the sport and some of the drivers past and present, and that is a good thing.. It depends *how* they spend the $000000 as to what the gains are. If I need to know how fast a machine goes in a straight line then I will watch drag racing.

Seems like a fun bit of promotion to me, it's hardly a waste of money when transporting a car and crew to Bonneville is a drop in the ocean to Honda/Lucky Strikes. Especially if they feel the results will pay them back in press coverage.
