Cotman Being Replaced!
Quote:
Champ Car wants Cotman replaced as race director.
"It's the owner's decision and they are seeking a replacement for me in race control," said Cotman on Thursday. "Am I disappointed, sure I am? But I'm tired of dealing with this so I guess I'll move on. I'm not leaving Champ Car, though."
Kevin Kalkhoven claimed that Cotman has too many other things on his plate and it was always the intention to replace him as Race Director.
"It's not a done deal at this point," said Forsythe. "If we don't find somebody better..."

I can't understand the reasoning here.
Full story.

That's gotta be one of the dumbest things Champ Car's ever done, if they really do it. Heck, change his job description to drop some of the non race director stuff so he's not overworked, but leave him as race director! As Robin Miller said, there are very few people who can do that job.
Having worked with Mr. Cotman (albeit at a remove, with the Clerk of the Course between us and him) I believe he is very good. No "clown" comments in the paddock last year! And he's respected the work that we volunteers do for the series -- I think he was surprised at first to find out what we did, and how well.

Oh boy I thought he did a good job. I even think he liked the job that everyone hates.... so what's the logic?

Series owners that are car owners. Unfortunately, you rule against the boss too many times - enough said! It stinks.

It's not a done deal... so I hope they realize replacing Cotman would be a big mistake... in my mind it was one of the highlights last year to have Tony Cotman on board as the race director...

It's the old adage... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
The only guy who could do better would be Dallenbach Sr., but he did it for many years and I think he wouldn't come back so leave Tony alone!

This move is just plain dumb. Considering Forsythe's comments, it looks like he is largely responsible for Cotman's ousting. That is just not right.

One of the series owners seemingly abusing his power just because some calls in regards to the racing didn't go his way doesn't look too good, IMHO.

I believe Tony's done an excellent job. This looks like a bad decision to me.
There are plenty of ongoing race directors who have less stellar resumes who manage to keep their jobs. It must be a personality/political issue, especially since they haven't named a replacement yet.

This just in.... Cotman has been re-confirmed as Race Director for 2006. Don't ask me how I know, but it's true (of course, it's still five weeks to Long Beach).
Perhaps the Three Amigos read 10-10ths?
