March 783
Reading the Jeff Allam interview in MS last night, I note they described his car as a 793. As it was an ex-Unipart car, albeit with Toyota not Dolomite engine, I think it was really an updated 783. In period the cars in 79 were described as 793s, but I'm sure I read they were the previous years cars, ie 783s, updated. Any views ?

The Lawrence book (if you can figure out the tables) says 25 793s, compared with 31 783s. So plenty of them.

Build record shows 1-29 on 783s plus a prototype. Unipart had chassis 11 and 12.
Nothing for 793s but have from various sources 793-2 Mansell and 15 Riley.

Chris, they looked v similar to the 783s, and definitely a different nose to a 'real' 793. I wonder whether with the salaries the drivers were on, and Pricey no doubt, they were able to afford brand new cars, updates I reckon. Not that these would have made much difference anyway with the engines they had to use!

The Brett Riley car is now owned by David O'Dwyer and is also campainged in Classic F3. It was due to be at Brands last weekend but due to a few problems David was unable to make it. He hopes to be at Silverstone next week.

Is there a plate on it Matthew, and if so, does this confirm whether its a 783, or 793 ?

I checked the cars yesterday and the Mansell car is 793/2 and the Riley car is 793/15.

Well that looks conclusive then Matthew. So if the 79 Unipart cars were proper 793s, not updated 783s, then I wonder where the 783s went to? Another of my pet theories demolished after 20+ years !!!

Dan
Brett Riley's Dave Price entered car in 1980 was based on a "spare Unipart 783" according to Autosport. Often described as a 793, and latterly as an 803 I think it always had the 783 tub. [There is no sales record of an 803 that seems to accomodate Price/Riley)
So that's where one went!

Chris, agreed re the Riley 80 car, it looked like a 783 with pods, but then again so did the '793s'...
When Kim M rebuilt his 772P after his mate David Ward smashed it up in a July Libre meet, it looked more like a 79B than a 782. He told me at the time that the pods he put on it were ex-Unipart/Price F3 ones.

Not sure if any of you guys are interested, but i have a multitude of studio shots and track shots of Brett Rileys March. Also have numerous pictures of Tiff's March, Tony Dron, Trevor van Rooyen, Nigel mansell, Ian Taylor, and even Tom Lauda (Niki's nephew). Plenty of Lammers/Lees & Regazzoni pics too.
I'd be happy to post some, albeit i dont own the copyright to all of them.

783 and 793 cars are very similar
The bodywork is slightly different
uprights are the same i bet wishbone geometry is slightly altered
why would u build a "new" car without some benefits
tubs will be the same so the 79 body can be fitted to a 78 car the 803 had cross over parts the uprights do vary as the early cars ued 78/9 uprights then mid season a new casting came long

From Kim's post on another thread, he rebuilt his 772P around a 783 tub, that Price had apparently abandoned due to flexing. So it looks like the Unipart team started 1979 with updated 783s, then switched to 793s mid-season. One 783 tub went to Kim, I suppose the other could have been the one Riley used in early 1980.
