The F1 stars that never were...
Formula 1 history is littered with names of 'could've beens' and 'nearly weres', but who do you think is the best driver NEVER to reach F1? I'm not talking about drivers like Stefan Bellof for instance who reached F1 but for whatever reason never hit the heights their potential and talent deserved, or people like AJ Foyt who clearly had no desire to race in F1, I'm talking drivers who never even got into a Formula 1 drive.
One obvious choice that springs to my mind would be Tom Kristensen.

Eric Helary, Christophe Bouchut, Roland Ratzenberger (I know he got in but...RIP Mr Ratzenberger) Dario Franchitti, Dan Wheldon...I can't think of anymore at the moment, will add more when I can think straight.

A lot of "F1 stars that never were" simply didn't want to do F1. In the same way that a lot of F1 drivers were BTCC stars that never were.
Rick Mears? Jeff Gordon?

Yes, but I am thinking the majority of "never were's" simply didn't want to do it.
Most who wanted to do it got there in some capacity, by hook or by crook.
Gonzalo Rodriguez could have been one perhaps.

Paul Tracy...he did test once or twice iirc, but it didnt lead to any offers. cant recall him ever saying that his wish was to make it in F1 though, but i guess he would count.

Well I know he may be in F1 next year but Sebastian Bourdais should be up there.
Also Bernd Maylander is a name that could've made it.

And thankfully Paul Tracy never made into Formula 1!
Tracy has spent his career in Champ Car throwing away every good ride he ever had.
He has crashed out himself and so many other drivers, thrown away championships (except for the single championship in 2003) that it is pathetic.
He has 200 plus CCWS starts and has DNF'ed 100.
Formula 1 is better off without him, unless you only watch racing for the crashes and driver fights.

Tom Kristensen and Jorg Muller come to mind. Bourdais still technically counts for now, because by rights he should've been in F1 5 years ago. Did any of the big touring car stars (other than Jorg) do much in single-seaters - Menu, Rydell, Yvan Muller, Giovanardi etc? I know Priaulx was good in the wet but mediocre in the dry.

Stephen South, Bernard Devaney, Micheal Roe, Eddie Jordan etc.
Great F3 drivers but never got F1 breaks (well South tested for McLaren and Jordan did a bit in F1) but...
