Sad News
An email has just arrived from Max Stahl. It reads:
"I'm sorry to spoil your daybut I received the sad news today that Doug Chivas passed away this morning at his home in WA. He was 82. "Doug had a history of irregular heart beat but it was never regarded as life threatening. "He was unconscious in bed this morning when his wife, mandy, woke up and fouond him. "She called her next-door neighbour, a paramedic, and an ambulance was called but Doug could not be revived." I used to admire Doug's driving abilities (and his ability to push, from memory, a Datsun 180B SSS up Bathurst's pit lane)I only met Doug once and I remember him as a real gentleman. RIP Doug Chivas and condolences to his family and friends. |

my condolences to Doug and His family.
I didnt know much about Doug except for his exploits at bathurst and that famous pushingt of the car across the line. It's sad when we loose someone in our sport and Im sure he will not be forgotten. as a side note , stoned pony , could you possibly give me the date that this happend so i can add it to the ten tenths history project so we can remember Doug on the day of his passing every year that it comes around ? RIP Doug |

Doug Chivas in Peter Brock's LJ Torana XU-1, under team orders tried to get maximum laps to save a pit stop and maintain their superiority over the second placed thirstier Falcon GT of Allan Moffat & Pete Geoghegan.
While leading the car ran out of fuel and Chivas tried to clutch start it at Murray's Corner to get the car to the pits. The car lost momentum and he leapt from the car and struggled to push it uphill to the pit lane. Urged on by his pit crew, who were unable to help until he reached the pit lane, and a huge television audience Chivas managed to make it. But they had lost the lead to Moffat and finished second. Also ran 3rd at Bathurst in a Charger in '72 RIP Doug |

The amazing Brock, using every last centimetre of bitumen, yet keeping the car straight and balanced and at full noise, came back with a staggering 2:20.0 as if to say: "Match that". And people just shook their heads, bit their lips and wondered who would be second". RIP Peter Brock. 1945-2006 |

Just last week i received the 'Legends of Motorsport' VHS which Doug competed in. One of the amazing things was it took that event last year for him to meet Murray Carter for the first time, despite competing against eachother all those years ago.
Very sad news |

Average punter thats for the picture, I remember it well I was a scrutineer and was at the end of pit lane when it happens, I can still see the pit lane offical Gary Smith stopping everyone from touching the car until they were allowed to but as soon as the car was an inch over that line Gary yelled so the pit crew could take over from Doug Thanks for the memories Doug, May you RIP |
