It was a case of 'From Russia with (no) Love' for racing duo Mika Vahamaki and Max Nilsson following a difficult Sunday.
On Saturday the HEICO motorsport pair were riding high, having secured third place grids spots for both races during qualifying at the Moscow Raceway. Unfortunately, as is often the case in motorsport, fate proved fickle and during lap three of the opening race, with Max at the helm, he found the car pushed out and was unable to continue.
What followed was some fantastic work by the team to dust themselves down and rev up for race two, only to find Mika, piloting the powerful Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, blocked by an Audi R8 LMS of Team Novadriver in the formation lap, forcing him into a spin to avoid contact.
A well-timed safety car allowed Mika to catch the pack and ironically it took one of the drives of Mika's career to get the car to P5 before the mandatory driver change. An unfortunate spin by Max saw the car eventually finish P7.
Speaking about the weekend, Mika said: “Obviously not the result we had wanted coming into the penultimate round. The car felt great all weekend, we worked hard on Saturday to secure good positions and although you never take anything for granted in sport we felt a good clutch of points was in hand.
“The most important thing now is to put the weekend results to one side and focus on ending our season on a high. Overall we've had a great year and we want our final race to reflect that.”
