As the single tyre manufacturer, I guess.. That will be an interesting bidding war.

It'll basically go to whoever can produce adequate tyres the cheapest, so a company with low wage rates like Kumho might be favourites.

Absolutely, Pirelli would do a good job. And now they are withdrawing from WRC, who knows?

That would certainly be interesting...I don't really think it matters what the tyre company is, as long as they do a good job.

They've thrown a fit since Michelin rebranded as BF Goodrich in WRC, so I'd say they'd be looking at F1.

IIRC they have been one of the pioneers to make special compounds for F1, back in the '80s.

Pirelli were involved in F1 in the early days of the world championship, but pulled out in 1957.

They came back in 1981 and stayed for most of the 80’s providing tyres for the back of the grid and managing just 3 more wins in 9 seasons of F1 (81-86 & 89-81). I am not sure that’s a good record for them to make a comeback.

I would be shocked if any other company than Bridgestone won the contract. Bridgestone is the only manufacturer who would be involved in F1 in 2007 and if the FIA say we are giving the contract to another manufacturer then is it possible that Bridgestone would say enough is enough and leave at the end of this season?

Bridgestone won the rights to the GP2 series, any idea how many companies bided then?

Is a previous win record of much relevance when it comes to deciding on a control tyre though?

On that basis, shouldn't Goodyear be automatic favourites?

Yes Pirelli would be perfect.... a dedicated tire supplier and would allow all teams to star n an even keel...

Pirelli would be great. I've been itching to have them back in the sport for the last few years.

Now, this "control" tyre thing...I am going to go back to ground covered in other threads, but we never actually got an answer.

To me a single supplier need not be a control tyre.

Seeing as "control tyre" seems to be being used by the FIA, does this mean that we are going to see the FIA mandate the parameters, or are we going to see a freeze after the first tyre they produce?

Or will they be free to develop?

If the latter, then it won't be a control tyre in my books.

I would hope that a "single supplier" would be able to offer a range of tyres, that are available to all teams (hence control). How about 5 variations , soft, medium and hard compound slicks with inters and wets.

The supplier would be able to alter the compounds to suit the venues, but would still have to have those distinctions available to all teams.

I totally agree with both of you, Scots and martyn, but in my world that is not a "control" tyre. However, hopefully this is what the FIA mean by it.

Jeremy, IIRC, Dunlop is owned by Goodyear.

They can't expect any company to produce a single tyre which is competitive in both dry and wet conditions. A range for 4 or 5 different tyres (perhaps allow for a Monsoon tyre as well), with infrequent development (mainly to fix problems rather than increase the pace), and then supplied to all the teams as they come with no specialised developments would be the right combination in my mind. Teams should have to build cars around the tyres, not the other way around, as that would see the wealthier teams exerting too much of an influence.
