How exactly do you use the 'launch control' in Wipe3out?

I found that if I rev the engine to a certain level, the ship launches itself off the line. Could someone tell me where exactly you rev the engine to, as I can only get it to work occasionally. And it's not cheating because the computer ships respond by activating their launch control if if I activate mine. Of course, it would be cheating if I used it in a two player game and they didn't know it was a hidden feature wouldn't it...
