Keyless cars
Had one of those new Meganes as a hire car last week. Quite a nice piece of kit (apart from being slow) and yes,I do like the look of them. But I think the credit card style key is nothing more than a gimmick, and probably a troublesome one too. You have to use the button on the card to lock and unlock the car at all times. If you lose the card, or it doesn't work, there is apparantly an "emergency key" whch you can use by some devious means. So what happens if you don't have the emergency key with you when the car locks you out miles from home? Technology too far, i think.

Do you have to slot the card into the car to start it, or is it clever like the Mercedes version which senses the card in your wallet?
If it is the former, then it's no improvement on a key. |

It's just a key in the shape of a credit card, so agreed - pointless. And there is one of those buttons to start (and stop) the engine - just like a Morris Minor. But apparantly the most up-market Meganes have the Mercedes feature.

There's a "Handsfree Renault Card" keyless option across the range for about £200.
And you didn't find the emergency key then? It's a metal key blade hidden in the middle of the plastic 'credit card' ... BUT the only door lock is on the front passenger side and hidden behind a little plastic cover you have to prise off - so I don't know what happens if you park up close to a wall?! |

I've often thought that this keyless hands free type thing would be a bit of a pain in some respects. The Mercedes version automatically unlocks the car when you approach it with the card in your pocket.
So, if you've parked on the drive, and you leave the house to ...er... go for a walk. Um, to the pub. Then it'll unlock as you walk by. Does it lock itself again when it realises you're not going to get in? Being French, I guess the Renault version would get upset and leave itself unlocked in the hope that someone else drives it away...

My Audi A4 does that. If you blip the keyfob to unlock it, then don't get in within 15 seconds, it locks itself again.
I don't know this for sure of course, but I can't believe that a Mercedes wouldn't. |

Once upon a time you had akey to get in the door of your Peugot. But the ignition was just a toggle switch. |

The Renault system is also used on the new Micra.
And that doesn't need anything to be inserted, just keep the keys in your pocket. Last edited by M Coupe; 15 Sep 2003 at 20:09. |
