NASCAR Sprint All-Star Challenge at Lowe's.
Sprint Cup takes a break of sorts this week, but there will still be some action. The All-Star race from Charlotte is here.
The entry list is 24 strong, of which 21 are already confirmed in the event by winning a race last season, being a former Cup or All-Star champion or by being the reigning Daytona 500 champion. A further two drivers will be added by finishing in the top two in the qualifying race and one last guy will be voted in by the fans. So not Robby Gordon then! The qualifying race is a 40 lap dash split into two 20 lap sections. The main event is a 100 lapper (a 25% increase on last years 80), divided into four 25 lap sections, with one mandatory stop before the final section. This does rather alter the dynamics of the race, particularly in terms of tyre wear. The winner of the main event takes away a cool one million dollars. If memory serves correctly, I think the top three positions after each of the first two quarters net $75,000, $20,000 and $10,000 respectively. So big cash! Provisional entry list for main event
Showdown practice speeds: http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2008...e1_speeds.html Also yesterday they ran the Sprint Pit Crew Challenge, which the #83 won. $70,000 to split between the seven man crew and first dibs on the pitbox selection for the race. So, check out the snazzy one-off liveries, have a head-trauma at the sheer amount of money involved and enjoy a frantic, nothing-to-lose-but-pride chase for some serious dollars. |

I am thinking that Carl Edwards or Kyle Bush will win the race.

Sadler quickest in that session then to take pole for the Showdown.
Now they qualify for the main race. |

Rowdy on the pole. Love him or hate him, the dude is making the rest of them lookin like they are standing still, for now.
http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2008...ta/lineup.html JPM's first start and it'll also be Dale Jarrett's final start. http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2008...ta/lineup.html rules have changed yet again, but i know that it is 2 from here plus a fan vote; wouldn't mind seeing both RedBull cars make but Elliott Sadler seems to be the class of the field and i think that David Ragan will be quick in this grouping...Reed and Bill will just not have the cars. VOTE FOR "last chance" BILL!! |

Well, I'm knackered, but I'll stay up for this.
I predict Kahne and Ragan to go through the Showdown. |

The fan vote driver wins!
Sam Hornish Jr. was ridiculous. What happened to Gordon, Bowyer and Burton? |

I didn't get to see the races unfortunately, but the result for Allmendinger will give him alot of confidence, and we'll have quite a few laps on Charlotte now, so hopefully he should qualify for the 600 and maybe even do well. |

He did drive well, but Hornish was scarily quick in both races.
He was three laps down in the main event, but with the free passes he got back into it and stormed to 7th. He is another who needs to qualify on time next week. |

I am probably in the minority but I though the race lacked much of the excitement of past races. The COT just doesn't cut it and makes the races boring.

No, it wasn't the most exciting event ever.
Would have been even worse if the Gibbs cars hadn't broken down. |

the COT has made racing more exciting at tracks that were not previously very entertaining and has made racing very mediocre at tracks that used to be good to watch. it is sign of the direction of the sport, i guess, and one that i don't seem to like very much. waytogo, Kasey! didn't see that coming. was also surprised to see Sam H do so well; he was FAST, but didn't his car look like it was "crabbing" all night? |

Yeah, I was going to ask about that. I was watching on a (very good) online broadcast so it wasn't a crystal clear picture. I was wondering if the paintjob was giving an illusion of the car being sideways all the time or something, because it looked bizarre! I kept seeing this car massively sideways and in the next shot it was travelling in a completely straight line.

OK, i guess we are both glad our sight isn't going bad (or worse, in my case).
two or three cars were doing that at some point; qualifying and/or the race, but the 77 was the most noticable. weeeeeird. |

That "crabbing" is causing a bit of a stir in the Nascar ranks, especially because it is near impossible to push the cars onto the scales first up.
I enjoyed the race, thought it was great without the crashes, it was full of good racing and what a result for Kasey, that morning he wasnt even in the race and that night he left the track $1,000,000 richer |

They were saying during the qualifying coverage that the crabbing is done to make the car turn better, they achieve it by twisting the suspension iirc. Carl Edwards and Roush started it a few races ago and a few have followed.

I noticed at Darlington they all looked like they were crabbing alot down the straights, I figured it might be the camera angle or something then.
Good to hear about Hornish too, looking forward to seeing how he goes in the 600 too. |

i mean, i figured it helped them turn because it ain't helping them going in a straight line. it looks AWEFUL and strange. about as bad as looking at the old cars when they were parked; they looked like something was broke on the left side.
i love clean racing with no crashes as long as there is some GOOD racing. there was very little of that Saturday night. |
