Is Webber the new Mansell?

Both considered journeyman drivers.

Flashes of brilliance in cars that only had a small chance of winning.

Found themselves in the right spot at the right time - Mansell at Williams in '85 and Webber at Red Bull in '09.

Initially overshadowed by more "talented" team mates. Mansell with Rosberg, then Piquet and Webber with Vettel.

Of course it all went pear shaped at the final race of '86 for Mansell and in the penultimate race in '87.

Mansell eventually won the championship in 1992.

Could Webber be the new Mansell?

Mansell was never overshadowed by a team-mate, although he was pretty much on a par with Elio and Keke, until he teamed with Prost. That makes Webber more like Mansell.

Button may be another fair comparison...

de Angelis comfortably had the better of Mansell when they were teamed at Lotus, although admittedly Mansell didn't get on with Peter Warr (who replaced Colin Chapman at the top) and Elio was more experienced. Rosberg also consistantly outpaced Mansell in 1985, even if Nigel finished with more wins. Nothing in Mansell's early career really suggested a world champion - even Frank admitted later that he thought he was signing a solid #2. The comparison with Webber could prove accurate - I've been hugely surprsied with what Mark's achieved recently.

I don't think so...

I've never noticed that Mark will claim full responsibility for any successes, but blame his team immediately if he doesn't win the race.
I've also never noticed Webber droning on & on during interviews in a monotone voice that would be an ideal cure for insomnia!

Mind you, in the car they are / were both spectacular to watch...

I wouldn't say Elio comfortably had the better. Mansell scored something like 90% of Lotus' points in 1983 and was closer to winning races than Elio in 1984.

Plus remember in 1985 Mansell had had that concussion in France that knocked him back a bit, yet by the end of the year he was winning.

Belatti should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Is Vettel the next Schumacher? Is Barrichello the next Patrese? Is Pechito Lopez the next Perry Mcarthy? Is Hamilton Senna or Gilles? Is Alonso Prost? Is Schumacher the last Schumacher? Is Trulli the new Fisichella? Is Button Damon Hill? And who is the new Hakkinen now that Raikkonen is gone? Who is Massa? Berger? Or Berger was Wurz? Is De la Rosa John Watson? Is B the next A? Is HRT a Toleman Hart? Is Newey Colin Chapman? Or is it Tony Fernandez?

Ughhh

Too many questions, not even one answer...

Just Kidding

I can see elements of the comparison in that in his early days Nige would flatter to deceive on many occasions, show amazing pace then fall off!

I actually think Mark has simply done a Senna and found a higher plain to play on, much like many Aussies like Gardner, Doohan and Bayliss, they ahve simply made it thier duty to get better to beat a perceived better team mate.

I think Mansell worked his tem harder than Webber is doing, he worked them to give him eactly what he needed and then won with it.

He might have been boring, moaning and chuuby but NOONE can deny on his day, no driver in the recent history fo F1 gave more at times.

true no driver messed up as much aswell, but he is British after all, we can never have it easy can we Foggy!!

Could Webber be the new Mansell?[/QUOTE]

Not in a month of Sundays! Frank Williams summed up Mansell perfectly, I think it was something along the lines of brilliant in the car, pain in the a*** out of it. Webber is neither, although to be fair he is no slouch behind the wheel and has surprised me in the last couple of races, but nothing like Mansell.

I believe it was a journalist who was expressing a similar view of Mansell when he said "He who dares whines".

Agreed - Nige was hamstrung with the Cosworth car for half of 83, yet he just got his head down and got on with it. When the chips were down or they went to tracks that required driver detemination and bravery like Monaco or the American street tracks then Mansell came to the fore. Looking back too Elio was a very big talent, and the difference between Keke and Mansell by the end of 85 was negligable, with perhaps Nige having the edge. He certainly showed Piquet up for being the unworthy champion of 81 and 83 that he was.
