No Overtaking at Chicanes September 16 17:52

An informal agreement between the drivers on safety grounds means that there will be no overtaking at the tight chicanes

An impromptu meeting took place during the Drivers' Parade on the back of a truck going round the circuit and all but one have agreed not to overtake at the chicanes - at least for the first lap. There was even the suggestion that the drivers were considering pulling out of the race.

After a tragic week, the tension is high at Monza, and the situation was further exacerpated yesterday when ex-Formula One ace Alex Zanardi lost both of his legs in a horrific crash in the CART FedEx race at Lausitzring, Germany. The feeling is that motorsport could not take another tragedy right now.

World Champion Michael Schumacher said: "One of our current racing colleagues is in hospital, seriously injured, Alex Zanardi, and there's a lot of things about this weekend that are not right. We should question whether we should race, so we have all agreed, except for one driver, that we won't overtake in the first and second chicanes on the first lap."

Last season a marshal was killed by flying debris at Monza after a massive first lap accident, and this too is fresh in the drivers' minds.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Geez.. from a race fan's point of view, i would think that this is stupid, because it takes away 50% of the excitement of the race. If the chicanes are dangerous, rid of it... and now what we have is a rolling start that starts after the 2nd chicane... Geez...hopefully, they stick it just soley on the start lap and not the whole race, cause monza's 4 over taking spots are half made by "tight chicanes"

But from my point of view, as much as this takes away all excitement from the start, it is a very good move by the drivers. Safety comes first, and seeing what happened to Burti in Spa, Monza last year and more of Zinardi in Germany, how much damage collisions of 2 cars of very different speed can cause, this is no doubt the right way to go.

I think Ferrari and JPM could well benefit from this, as they would see their position safe, especially Ferrari whose LC electronics arent as good as some of the others...

The biggest losers of this is the Mclaren drivers, Jacques/GF/Jos (who can make up a huge amount of places at starts...they would have their opportunities missed...

I wouldnt be surprised if any one of them are the 1 person unhappy with this...

Understandable when you hear it was Alonso, there's only a few chances in a Minardi

Schumacher was absolutely correct, yeas they came to race, but in light odf the past week, we didn't need another tragedy to follow yeasterday's. If we're trying to get the world back to normalcy, we don't need to see more mangled bodies.

For the record, Speedvision reports that the dissenting drivers were Villeneuve, Button and Fisichella.

Button, proved the "wisdom" of his position on the first lap and has guaranteed that he and Jarno Trulli will NEVER be exchanging Christmas cards.

I think its another massive knee-jerk over-reaction to a normal situation, the drivers knew 12 months ago they would be racing on Monza in its current form, if they had any misgivings regarding the track, they should have raised them much sooner, not hours before the start of the race. I am 100% behind JV's view that they should have raced.
I find it very cynical that M Schu would be the "ringleader" in all this, after all his WDC is over, he doesn't have anything to loose.

I understand that there were two "happenings" before the race, first about an agreement of not overtaking in the first lap, and the second, after the one minute silence, with TGF wanting the race to be cancelled due to a "bad feeling" he had...

Not only Fernando was against it, also Jos and Jaques, and several others(seeing his start Button must be one of them )

It was good to see Jos go up to P7 starting from p19.......

Wasn't it the bad feeling something related to "saving an engine"?
good to see Jos taking 7th place... excellent to see JPM at the top and to listen to the anthem. Glad to see him glad. Glad to see his dad, (whose birthday is today) so proud
