Cheapest is probably not a word used often in conjunction with single seater racing especially at these levels. It has been said that top Formula Ford teams are on budgets of around £100.000!! but it does vary from team to team in the different formulae.

Well I've heard the following figures for 2002:

FF with VD GBP£129,000 (from a team owner)
FR GBP£150,000 (from a potential FR racer)
F3 GBP£250,000 (on this post)

As was previously said, cheap is not an option here. It is more likely to be value for money with TV coverage, crowds, etc...

No I wont be driving myself, but I am managing Colin Mason - the welsh karting champion (that explains the link at the bottom). We are trying to enter Formula Renault for 2002. I have heard so many differing values for single seater championships I was just wondering if any other people have been quoted any other amounts. Simply out of curiosity.

Formula Renault is clearly the cheapest! According to today's Autosport, Colin Brown has been offered a FREE drive in Italian FRenault.

Oh he only won the world karting championships in 2000 ahead of people like Lewis Hamilton and then had a rough ride in FRenaults last year - very good in the first races but then ran out of money. Also led if I remember right at least one round of Renault winter series before car packed up. Could really do with a sponsor and a new manager.

Had a look at www.colin-mason.co.uk nice site very informative. I wish you luck in your search for money but you have to ask yourself if someone with Colin Browns record is struggling, i fear you have a very tough job on your hands.

I would have thought it would be better for him to experience top level competition in the S1 than move straight into cars where the learning curve will be extremely tall and very expensive.

Yes i know but if you saw this guy race you'd understand why im doing this. In two years and 76 races in Senior TKM he has 60 podiums and 38 wins to his name.

I understand that their are a lot of talented drivers out there struggling but i am confident that he will succeed. Maybe Colin Brown is not cut out for single seaters, no disrespect to him i am sure he is enormously talented, but some karters adapt better to cars than others.

Their are tow reasons why i believe he will adapt quickly and succedd in single seater racing cars.

1. He tested a Formula Ford after winning the welsh title. It was at Pembrey in the wet, and he did 30 laps on slicks. Their was another guy from super 1's testing a formula ford at the same time. Colin went faster on slicks than the super 1 guy went on full wets, and it was Colin's first ever driver in a single seater car.

2. Colin studies Motorsport Engineering at Pembrokeshire College, and will soon be studying for a degree in Motorsport Engineering. He has enormous impressive knowledge of cars/ and karts and his skill of setting up the car exactly to his liking is also highly impressive.

All we need is a sponsor.

Not wishing to belittle his achievements but his 60 podiums in STKM seem to be all at a club with at most 10 entries. Plus everytime a top driver went to St Athans, ie. Sargeant, Allen, they won easily. Had he been racing at somewhere like Shenny i'm sure his record would not be half as good.

But still your right some drivers just can't transfer their kart racing abilities to cars and some average kart drivers excell in cars, but not many mind you. I hope that your driver falls into that latter.

Have you got much of a budget already? Have you thought about the BRDC/Silverstone Formula Ford Championship. Very cheap starting point for car racing and the prize is a season in Avon Junior Formula Ford in 2003.

I spoke to several FRenault teams about the 2002 championship was quoted everything from £85k to £130k but its definatly THE championship to be in. The winter series is very good values as I was given prices from £7k to £11k which isn't that bad considering. Just got to try and raise it now
