The points system

I feel that there should be points for at least the top ten finishers. Maybe top twelve. It will make the battle more interesting. If the top teams were to finish all of their races (which wont happen) the other teams will have nothing to show. It might be written that a driver finished 7th but he has nothing to show for it. Now even Minardi will have something to race for. Not just because they like racing but instead now for real points. In fact this will reward consistency almost as much as speed.

Well, this comes up a lot here on Ten-Tenths. I used to agree that we need a new system, but I've changed my stance.

At the moment, if, say, Ralf Schumacher is 7th, he has something to fight for, to get in to the points, and is a big motivator for the mid grid teams. Perhaps top six damages Minardi and Jaguar, but top 12 scoring, to me, is not a good idea. We would have situations were drivers just don't try at some tracks, knowing that more than likely, only half the field will finish...

Plus there is the historical side of things. Keep it as it is, I say.

Yes, I would like a more spread out system with, for instance, to reward the top ten, and a bit less difference between scores, specially between 1st and 2nd.

Something like 9 6 4 3.5 3 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5, or, without decimals, 18 12 6 7 6 5 4 3 2 1, would be not absolutely absurd, but I'd prefer 20 15 12 10 8 6 4 3 2 1.

I love the way scoring goes in FIM GPs and in CART, but it help there the equality of teams and cars/bikes (warning! blasphemy here: I would love chasis/engines sold at others teams, it promotes sameness, but it is not good for the big money, I suppose)

LOL I know those points systems are irrelevant, but that's the reason I can say it without any responsability

Obviously the downside for all this is the breakage of the scoring system tradition, and it is not irrelevant.

I think the system we have right now is good enough. If we have a broader point scoring system - you'll have a lot of people scoring points which isent really ideal IMO. I mean, what if someone's a lap down or two laps down or even three laps down, running down in 8th position and they go home with a couple of points.

It's not pleasant to see teams like Minardi not scoring points for 2-3 years but it's really up to them to make a difference. F1 is a tough world - thats the way it should be.

Since there are usually many finishers to a race nowadays, particularly since many circuits are so mickey-mouse that reliability problems and accidents are rare, that awarding the top 10 would not be a bad idea.

Perhaps 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 would be good.

I think top 8 or 10 would be good.

Thats personally what I think too. I used that system to work out the points of several previous years. You generally tend to end up with a similar result, it just helps to distinguish all those who get 1pt or none at all.

I do my own championship, where everyone scores.

You get a point for pole, point for fastest lap and 22 for a win.

Daft but fun idea.

Perhaps points should be deducted for a lack of sportsmanship or utterly naff driving!

That way certian arrogant people would have a reduced tally and others would end up with a negative total score and drop through the 'trap door'.

I mean some of the driving in the first two races has been unbelievable. Such a lack of skill has not been witnessed since Maureen on 'Driving School'.

Keep it as it is. This way its an achievement to get some points, otherwise its too easy. F1 is supposed to be challenging, they can't go dishing points out willy nilly.

I don't think this system should be changed, but I like the idea of deducting points for a lack of sportsmanship or utterly naff driving!

So do I.

MS would end up with minus 100 points every season.
