Yoong Montoya should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
He who wins in Melbourne wins WDC

I've noticed that ever since Melbourne became the opening grand prix, the winner of that race has gone on to win the WDC in 1996 (Damon Hill),1998 (Mika Hakkinen),2000 (Michael Schumacher, and 2001 (Michael Schumacher). And 2002 doesn't look like an exception either with MS's current form. The only exceptions were 1997 and 1999 and the champion in both years won the second race in Brazil (Villeneuve 1997, Hakkinen 1999).

Ever since Melbourne arrived, the WDC has been decided in the very first race apart from 97 and 99.

You can extend that to "He who wins the first GP of the season wins WDC"! Then you can include in your list Ayrton Senna in 1990-91, Nigel Mansell in 1992, Alain Prost in 1993 and Michael Schumacher in 1994-95.

Yoong old chap, that's only 2/3 rds by my reckoning, 4 out of 6 going on to win the WDC?

They used to say that about Brazil. Then DC won last year. I don't 'do' all this trend stuff myself.

The person who wins the championship, is the person most likely to win races. He is therefore most likely to win the first race of the season (or any other race, e.g. Brazil, Spain etc etc...).

So it isn't coincidence, but then it isn't surprising either.

Yeah but the correlation is much stronger for the season-opener. 11 times out of 13 if Schumacher does it this year. Is it because the cahmpionship tends to be won by those who are well prepared in advance?
