Andy Metcalf should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Grading

This is a question to those more experienced at Marshaling than me. I am now in my second year as a Course Marshal. Eventually I would like to climb the grading ladder. However, I do not wish to flag, and some clubs do not seem to recognise 'Incident' or 'Incident Officer' as a grade. Am I better off staying as a Course Marshal?

Andrew - why don't you want to flag? Personally I'm not keen on it either, but it really is a skill you need to have in the long term if you want to keep marshalling. In these days of low marshalling numbers, it makes sense to be able to do all things.

Btccnews......
Flagging doesn't appeal to everyone, but as EP says, it's a usefull feather in your cap (Or Baseball Hat)especially if in the future you wanted to marshal overseas. Many foriengn clubs see flagging as the first stage in marshalling - others you are expected to be competent in all course disciplines.
I don't know of any UK Clubs that don't recognise Incident (Although some may still call it FIRE, as it used to be in the BMMC)If you are a BMMC member, speak with your regional grading officer for more advice.

I should point out that I have nothing but the utmost respect for flaggers - it's just that I don't personally particularly enjoy flagging. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

However, like it or not, I'm aware I have to have the basics and be reasonably competent at it.

I'd still like to know what's putting you off andrew?

Although I Observe more often than not, I still jump at the chance to wave flags whenever I can (This can be said for a lot of Observers)
Flagging can leave you just a drained at the end of the day, but mentally more than physically, simply because you are totally involved in the racing, wherever you are on the circuit - be it a straight or a nice tight corner. EP spoke of respect - I have the utmost respect for Course/Incident Marshals, but (Having done all that) couldn't wait to be able to flag. However the great thing about being a marshal is that if you DON'T want to do something you really don't fancy then no one will force you to. If you're happy being a course marshal, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I.O.'s don't need a flag grade, but if in time you wanted to become an observer, you WOULD need this grade.

the other thing is, if u can do everything, then the chores can be spread about, so if u have a post where everyone doesnt like to flag if you all take turns, its not so bad as being put there for a whole race day.

Thanks everybody for your input. I think what I will do is carry on as a Course Marshal for the 2003. And next year I will think about trying something different.

Even though you may not be thinking of upgrading this year don't forget to go to the training day(s).

I started flagging little over two years and when I started I didnt like it at all. But as the time went on I learned more and more and actually began to love flagging. However, I graded Flag end of last year and have moved onto course.

Last weekend at a Rally X was my first time out on Course and I have to admit I was bored silly ! So, it just goes to show.

bttcnews, if you get a good observer when you are course marshalling, and there are more than a few bods on the team, ask if you can try it for a couple of sessions.
Most Observers don't bite, and will actively encourage you without pressure. If you do a few races with a competent flagger you will get some idea of what we mean, and can make a more balanced decision.

Well that would explain why you haven't met any good observers then

My sentiment entirely, Pinki.

Chigley, why not come along to the HSCC two day meeting in early July. If you are really lucky you may be able to play at being an Observer yourself

Sorry, her indoors has demanded a viewing that weekend as its the only free weekend until the end of Sept. Besides I've done the observing bit a few times to stand in, didn't appreciate the writing and all those numbers. Give me a set of flags, colours, shades, sponsors logo's and a race to read for blue flagging and I'm as happy as I need to be. Besides, wild horses wouldn't tempt me to go to Brands.

Yes Chigley,
Why not come to Brands, I am curious. Have you ever been and if so what put you off and did you tell anyone like the Chief marshal or deputy?.

Those with long memories will remember the episodes and responses I got from Brands and BRSCC officals regarding a FFF and facilities. Suffice to say those concerned are still in place, the facilities haven't changed and from what I can percieve the attitude is the same.
