Silly names - a VAG monopoly??
So, lets run through some of the wonderful names VAG (especially VW) have served up recently...
First we had the VW Sharran. I was just sooo disappointed they didn't call the Seat version Tracey... Then, the VW Phaeton. Or Feoutus, as it will inevitably be called. Though at that size, a dread to think what it's the feoutus of... Then the Skoda Superb. Ok, it is, but that's no excuse, even if it is an old marque from Skoda's past. And finally the VW Touareg. Or Toe-rag. Which will inevitably sum up most of its drivers. Actually, at that size, maybe the Phaeton is actually a Toerag Feoutus?? P.S. Top of the range Toerag: 5.0 V10 TDi, 310bhp, 550 lb/ft. |

Actually, the Japanese market names for various cars are hilarious. Must be something to do with the language.
My favourite example - UK market, Nissan 300ZX, glorious twin turbo beasty, never did own one but often coveted one. Japanese market name? - I give you the Nissan Fairlady! |

Daewoo takes the cake.
Nubira??? Bring on the Nubiles! Leganza? we're soooo chic that we cannot even be bothered with the first E. The problem with the VW Phaeton is that the name actually means something. And it's not a Sedan. |

I always thought that the Mitsubishi Carisma was a silly name, but then I suppose it was the only charisma the car was ever going to have...
Oh, and the Ford Focus and Ford Ka are a bit naff. I imagine that Ford have a department called the CAR naming FOCUS group, so I'm awaiting the arrival of the Ford Group(y)! |

I guess you never heard of the Suzuki Cappucino or ??? Expresso. Forget which company came out with that name. Dodge had an Neon--Expresso trim model.
I think the full name for the Nissan 300ZX is actually called "My Fairlady", but Fairlady for short. Or how about some cooler names--Toyota Harrier! |

Hyundai Excel... Why give a car the name of a spreadsheet?
Citroen C5... C5 always makes me think of the Sinclair C5. Or the Daf 55... Why give a truck the same name as a rally car (bottom of the page)? |

That's nearly, but not quite, as awful as the Suzuki Wagon R.
Memorably described by Quentin Wilson in a Top Gear pullout as... (shame it's gonna get censored - kinda loses the punch )... "Absolutely no redeeming features. A 110%, twenty four carat Ronsealed ****'s car." |

Here is a list of car names I cut-copied-pasted from a US site, you'll recognise some decriptions from the Japanese market. BTW, I DID NOT COME UP WITH THE DESCRIPTIONS! DON'T BLAME ME! Enjoy!
Daihatsu Rocky: Did they name it after the movie or the mountains? Suzuki Esteem: It's a car that makes you feel good about yourself. Daihatsu Charade: It's pretending to be a car. Mitsubishi Aspire: It's ambition is to be a car. Dodge Neon: What's tacky-looking and glows in the dark? AMC Gremlin: Was this car full of them? Toyota Stout: Maybe they'd sell more if it was "Big & Tall" Subaru Justy: Justy whaty? AMC Pacer: This car just goes back and forth all the time. Toyota Cressida: Named after the backstabbing, unfaithful Shakespeare Character, right? Dodge Scamp: This car is either a rogue, or it moves in a stop-and-go fashion. Dodge Swinger: This is the perfect car for wife-swappers. Plymouth Reliant: Ironic, considering it was marketed as a "disposable car". Hyundai Accent: Does it's engine make odd inflection noises? Kia Mentor: Does this car teach you how to drive it? Mitsubishi Mirage: The car that you only think you're driving. Daihatsu Applause: When you buy it, the salespeople cheer for you. Daihatsu Rugger: The perfect car for Carpet installers or Rugby players. Honda Acty Crawler: Does it have wheels or 6 legs? Honda Ascot: In accidents, this car gets all tied up in knots. Honda Jazz: Like, cool, man... Honda Joy-Machine: For those who enjoy sex. Isuzu Big Horn: For people who hate the sound of those little beep-beep horns. Isuzu Forward: Does it have a reverse gear at all? Mazda Bongo: * Mazda Bongo Brawny: * Mazda Bongo Friendee: * Maybe if they keep trying, they'll figure out what's wrong with the name... Mazda Carol: Realizing "the Edsel factor", they quickly changed it's name to MeLady! Mazda Titan: It's gotta be a really big SUV. Mitsubishi Guts: That's all they'll find of you, after you crash it. Nissan Big Thumb: ??? Nissan Fairlady Z: Possibly inspired by a Giant Robot show for girls. Nissan Largo: This car goes really slow. Daihatsu Town Cube: Yes, it's a small, square minivan, advertized like it was a wardrobe or closet on wheels. I'm not kidding. Chevrolet Citation: Is that what the cops give you when they pull you over? Plymouth Duster: I suppose it's better than "Mop" or "Broom". Dodge Demon: Who do you think would drive a car with a name like that? Could it be... Satan?? Dodge Drifter A car for Transients? Dodge Rampage: The Road-rage car. Mitsubishi Mini Active Urban Sandal: A car with the name of a shoe? Nissan Prairie Joy: Michael Landon Inspired...? Mitsubishi Exceed: Careful it doesn't "Exceed" the speed limit Isuzu Mysterious Utility Wizard: Obviously, they wanted it to sound more like a tool than a truck. Mazda Scrum: Another car with Rugby players in mind... Isuzu Giga 20 Light Dump: As appealing as a bowel movement... Nash Rambler: This is the car for people who just drive on and on aimlessly... Plymouth Fury: Another road-rage car! Chevrolet Luv: A Make-out truck |

It's close isn't it. But which wins?
The Mitsubishi Mini Active Urban Sandal or the Isuzu Mysterious Utility Wizard ?? Is it all in the translation, or are they all just using the same random word generator?? |

S-Cargo is one of the BEST car names of all time!! Always loved them. As is the name of that Skyline brooding in the background.
One of the biggest selling cars in the US is the Ford "Town Car". |

A local car dealership(!) has one here for £3495. |

Forget all these silly initials that are used to designate the fast cars in the range. Toyota came straight to the point with the Chaser Exciting Version. Couldn't be clearer.

Try saying "Toyota Yaris" with a strong Irish accent....
My Irish grandma came to our house this morning and proudly announced that she had bought a "Toyota Yar-se". Last edited by Hobson; 23 Apr 2003 at 14:46. |
